I decided to do kustom car style air scoops on this build. So here's the tank, with the shape and location of the air scoops drawn on, in marker pen.
Before going any further, I needed to get rid of a few dents, using a bumping hammer and a home-made dolly.
Here's the action shot
Using thick plastic as tracing paper, I traced out the shape of the scoop.
Next I drew a centre line.
Then, I cut it out and cut down the centre line, but not all the way. And spread the upper and lower halves apart, to allow for the curvature of the scoop.
Now that I had my templet, I taped it to some cardboard, sprayed over it, and once dry, I cut it out and made a cardboard one.
Here it is, transferred to the sheet metal.
Using a jig saw, I cut out the scoops
Hammering out the sheet metal to fit the tank just right, took some time.
Here's the left side hammered out, tacked on, and placed on the bike to size things up before I go ant further.
With the scoop in place and looking good, I took some 3/16 in. rod, and bent it so it followed the line of the front of the scoop, and tacked each end.
Then I cut the tacks, and took off the scoop.
For practical purposes, it's a good idea to install a 'dam'. Here it is, all welded in.
With the 'dam' welded in, I tacked the scoop back on, and repeated steps 11 through 17 for the right side.
